Re: Battery for 77 MGB
If the battery does not have a handle, or the handle looks too fragile to take the weight of the battery I place a length of old seat belt around the battery to lower it into place and leave it there using a plastic paper clip to hold the ends of the belt together over the top of the battery.

Doh! Obvious when you think about it. Not used to such refinements on our car. Thanks for putting my mind at rest, at least it is nothing that has fallen off.

Threaded holes under front 'chassis' legs?
Decided to change the radiator hoses on our 1964 'B' after seeing a few small cracks on the hose from the bottom hose to the heater pipe. I've gone back to the original style with the metal elbow rather than the welded rubber one piece used on the later cars. Less spares to carry as the top and bott...

Re: Factory record copy Personal Export Delivery
For anyone going for 'exact originality' any personal export car that was used on UK roads prior to export would have had a yellow border around the number plate to show tht purchase tax had not been paid. I believe this border was changed to red when the white and yellow number plates were intorduc...

Re: Battery cut off switch
Just a quick warning.... If the switch is the red removable 'T' shape key type. Be aware that the plastic key is not hard wearing and after some time the end will wear/compress and not have enough length to push the contacts in the switch together. I cured the problem with a self tapping screw in th...

Ultra sonic cleaning -any tips on buying a bath?
I have been toying with the idea of buying an ultra sonic cleaning bath for some time, but am a bit worried that the £100 ish models might not be any use. Has anyone got any experience of them, or any hints or tips please? I would like one that ideally will take items up to about 10 inches long. Tha...

HS6 carbs -removing needles
A young friend has asked me to assist with the re-build of a pair of HS6 carbs that he has. On examining the needles they seem to be held in place by something other than the locking screw, and also seem to be spring loaded. I've not come across this before as my cars are a 58 A and 64 B. Any sugges...

Re: Gearstick Hiss
Have you tried a different bush (No.69 on diagram). This I think was originally a nylon bush. Perhaps the after market part is not the same material and the usual 'if it looks right it is right' has been applied. This could transmit the buzzing instead of dampening it.

Re: Head Removed - How do I clean coolant passages in block?
If you are keen to go down the DIY route you could take out the core plugs and get a lot of the muck out by poking with something like a bicycle spoke and sucking with a thin tube attached to a vacuum cleaner. On an engine of this age it is good practice to replace the core plugs anyway, as they hav...

Not MGB related but just a sign of the times.....
Driving up the A12 this morning I overtook an artic and trailer and in the dirt on the back of the trailer some wag has scrawled:
'No toilet rolls left in this trailer overnight'.....
