I think it was user error on my part... I believe I failed to pull the knob all the way back out, which was causing weirdness...

So drilled out the bolt hole and tapped it to M8 1.25. Aha! One of the inputs must have broken off this one and a previous owner installed the unitary reservoir/pump unit.
