trip counter
trip counter
Hi, firstly i would like to wish all members a wonderful Christmas and a happy new year.
I have today noticed that the mileage and trip counter are not working, however the speedo is working fine. Any advise what could have gone wrong and how it could be fixed
thanks in advance and regards

Re: trip counter
More than likely it'll be a fault in the gearing that drives the mileage and trip indicators. Unless you think you can strip down and rebuild the unit it's probably best to get an exchange speedometer. Make sure you get the correct one.
Or you can live with it but I don't know what happens at MOT time when the speedometer reading is the same as at the last test.

Re: trip counter
Evening Mario. It's inside the speedometer. I've not taken one to pieces myself although an acquaintance used to repair speedometers etc and I have seen one in pieces. It's a worm gear if I remember correctly driven by the main drive.
Can you zero the trip reading.by turning the plastic drive?
Setting the individual drums with the numbers on is not for the faint hearted.

Hi Vic
Set the trip counter to zero and went for a drive. For the first twoi miles it did not move, then worked for a mile and a half and stopped again

It does appear to be a fault with the drive mechanism to the rotating numbers drums.

Re: trip counter
Hi Mario
Speedy cables or JDO instruments can repair your own speedo, and keep its current total mileage. Both have websites. Alternatively you could take a chance on a second hand one but make sure you get the correct one for the gearbox. Check the number on the face - should be 13?? or 1000.

Hi all
Happy new year to all. Do not know what has happened but it seems to have started working again after a couple of miles. Fingers crossed it keeps going. Thanks as usual for your help

Re: trip counter
Sorry to resurrect a dead thread, but I'm having the same problem. I'll reset to zero, it'll run fine for a couple of miles, then stop. This morning driving in to work (I commute about 12 miles each way one or two days a week in my '78 GT), it did the standard work-fine-then-stop, but when I turned the knob to reset it to zero it didn't immediately start turning again. Rather, it decided it'd turn the 1/10th mile dial about twice every mile or so. After about 4 miles it was at 000.8. Odometer is also not turning when it does this.
On a side note, everything I've read about the '78 says you just twist the speedo using a pipe clamp or something and it comes right out, no fiddling with nuts on the back side required. But for the life of me I can't figure out how you'd get the speedo twisted, as it's recessed into the dash.
