Hi Tim,

I believe you have an early MGB Roadster - i.e. 1962
Per Barrie's Notes on the MGB:-

G= MG
H= Overhead valve engine
N= Sports (2 seater)
3= 3rd series (the 1st & 2nd were the MGA
L= Left hand drive (RHD cars have no letter)

Per Clausager:-
The engine numbers with that reference started with 101 in May 62 , but were higher than yours by December 62.

Cheers,
Charles

I've had a look in Clausager's book "Original MGB" and come up with this. Certainly your car appears to be an early one.
G means it is an MG
H means it has an engine between 1400 and 2000 cc
N means it is a two seat tourer
3 means it is a mark 1 model built between 1962 -1967. These are known as the pull-handle cars due to the outer door handles.
L means it is left hand drive

The next numbers indicate its build number. These started in May 1962 with 101. By January 1963 they were up to 4619. If your car really is 688 it is a 1962 - there are very few of these left. Look very carefully at the chassis plate as it is easy to misread the numbers

The engine number also points to a 1962 build date. By December 1962 they were up to 18G-U-H/4385.
