Re: 2 litre engine and 5 speed mazda gear box

I have some experience of how the factory decide the gear ratios. 1st is about gradeability, being able to start on a 1:4 (or was it 1:3 - cant remember). 2nd is decided so you hit 60 mph at the red line. I agree with Peter that there seems too big a gap 2nd to 3rd on the MGB, but this may have been...

Re: 2 litre engine and 5 speed mazda gear box

Much better to get an overdrive box (if you haven't got one already). Why settle for 5 gears when you can have 6. Do you need to go as far as 2 litres. I'm sure a mildly tuned 1868cc (+0.060") would suffice. First step, get Peter Burgess to work his magic on your head, second fit K&N filter...

Re: 1972 BGT steering column bushes

Hi Ian, I've just had a browse of the Moss catalogue and you are right that the collapsible column came in in 72, so my 71 roadster will be different to your GT. Moss do list the bushes for yours - top bush MGP1050B, bottom MPB1002, about £13 the pair. I stopped doing business with Midland Sports an...

Re: 1972 BGT steering column bushes

I had an advisory on the MOT for play in my top bush of the column. I bought a new nylon bush from Midland Sports and Classics. I had to cut it lengthways to get it in. Even then it was pretty tight on the shaft when oiled. After many years (about 15) and 30,000 miles its worn to be just about right...

Re: "classic" oil - is it?

The classic oils website is very illuminating. The Morris golden film I'm using has 700 ppm ZDDP, Castrol Classic 800 ppm ZDDP, but Duckhams 1300 ppm (parts per million). The Morris is said to be their best selling 20W/50 might have something to do with it being the cheapest. You get what you pay fo...

Re: "classic" oil - is it?

Funnily enough a similar question cropped up on the MG enthusiasts forum. Paul Hunt has written a piece on his brilliant Bee & Vee site all about it. www.mgb-stuff.org.uk/enginetext.htm#oils (cant get it to hyperlink so you might have to paste it into your browser) Basically he says that we shou...

Re: "classic" oil - is it?

The important thing is does it contain ZDDP, which is a zinc additive which protects against cam and tappet wear in older engines. Some posters on this and other forums have suggested that Comma and Halfords 'classic oil' are the same, but I wouldn't like to say. I've found a cheap source of Morris'...

Re: Sump bolts

Got to mine OK by just running the nuts to the end of the threads on the engine mounts then lifting under the sump. I could then get the front ones with an open ender. I cant remember whether I had removed the front pulley at this stage.

Re: Middle exhaust section with Bomb silencer

Hi Pete The system was a cheap one and doesn't fit particularly well. The U shaped bracket you mention is about an inch too far back so I've had to space it out on the body side. The rear of the first silencer is only about 1/4 inch from the floor but at the front the pipe is about 1 inch from the r...

Middle exhaust section with Bomb silencer

I have a 3 piece exhaust system I'm looking to replace the first box with a bomb type to prevent it hitting the ground so often. The existing silencer seems to put up with this but it makes the joint with the cast manifold leak. Does anyone know where I can get one from at a reasonable price, mild s...
