Tow rope anchoring points?

Post by steve00136 »

Hoping I never need to be towed or in case I am asked to give a tow where are the best places to fix a tow rope. Has anyone made a bracket that is for that purpose and where is it fixed?

My 72 BGT has what I believe are towing eyes on the front bumper brackets, one underneath each overrider. Never used them, but they appear substantial enough.
Nothing on the back, but it would be easy to fit something similar.

Towing eyes were fitted to cars going to Canada (and possibly the USA). I have these from Moss - Europe https://www.moss-europe.co.uk/towing-ey ... 1-426.html, which are for Healey 3000s but I think with modification can be adapted with a bit of filing and drilling to fit the MGB at the front. Moss Motors (the USA site) also list rear ones as part No. 267-522 which fit under the rear spring, but you don't seem to be able to order these from the UK site. Perhaps a call to Moss would help. Strictly speaking they are both 'Tie Down Eyes' but they are substantial. The eye is too small diameter for motorsport though.

I have these eyes at the front as described in my earlier post. Factory fitted.

P.S. these eyes may also be tie-down eyes, but they do seem to be fairly common on UK MGBs.
They are large enough to take a strong carabiner, and a rope or tow line could be attached to that.
Having said all that, I've never put them to the test!

I have those on the front of my B and I have put them to the test. They work. I have also tested the rear ones with success.

Early MGBs (my 1964 one and a previous 1964 one that we owned) had a large eyehole welded centrally on the main front cross member. Don't know how long this continued for, perhaps ended with the 1965 model year? Like others, I have the brackets pictured above, which came with second hand bumpers bought at an auto jumble, so probably not an export only item.
