Temporarily Exporting A Car - Impact on Insurance and Value

Hello,

I’m relocating to the Channel Islands for work. As it will be for over 12 months and I’ll be classed as a resident, local laws require me to register the car and affix local registration plates. I don’t plan to live in the Channel Islands permanently, so in due course the MGB will be reimported back to the UK.

Does anyone have any experience of doing this? The legal process seems straight forward enough, and so long as I continuously own the car I shouldn't fall foul of HMRC on my return. However will the car (which was first registered in the UK) end up being classed as an import? If so;
  • Will this impact value (not that I plan to sell)?
  • How will the insurance companies treat the car once it’s re-registered in the UK?
Put another way… do I take the MGB, or are the headaches such it’s better to SORN the car at the back of a family member’s garage and find myself an MGF to play with.

I'd SORN it in the UK and hire a car in the Channel Islands to save the inevitable bureaucracy you'll encounter.
Get someone to start it regularly and get insurance for laid up cover.
