hazard switch

Greetings. Before I spend $35 for a hazard switch 1979 MGB I have a question. Neither the the directional signals work or the hazard lights. Would the problem be most likely in a bad hazard switch? And is there any way to check the switch? Thanks

Hi Norman
Looking at the link below. Pull the switch from the plug and join the green wires together. Split pin maybe wrapped in electrical tape so it cannot short on anything.

In the off position if you had a test meter those contacts should be closed.

You can carefully open the switch and clean the contacts inside.

I successfully cleaned the H shaped contact in my switch this way. Electrical switch cleaner is best used.

It is an easy switch to take apart and clean. Many have done so.

The normal indicators run through the hazard switch so this should be the first port of call for troubleshooting after the bulbs, fuse and flasher relay

This will sound nuts, but before anything else try rocking the hazard switch on-and-off a great many times.

The contacts corrode if the switch isn't used, and if you turn it on once or twice they don't conduct. Try, say, 30-40 times/until something happens. The surprising news is that your indicators are powered via your hazard switch, so a moody hazard switch can take down your indicators too.

Deranged as this possible remedy will seem, it's free, quick, requires no skill or tools, and often works.
