Insurance

Post by Dave Wheatley »

Seeking help here.
I am currently insured with RH.
I do not have a modern car.
RH are now asking £500 for the three cars, 1978 MGB GT, 1972 Mk3 Ford Cortina L 1600, 1967 Morris Minor convertible. All 3 cars in standard state. This takes into account that the MGB will be classed as my every day car and the other 2 as my classics.
Last year the premium as classics was £320.
Does this sound OK? Any suggestions?
I'm now 81.
I've not had a claim for 40 years.

Dave, whenever this sort of thing happens to me (insurance premiums of any sort) I always phone the brokers and ask to have the same as last year. It has always worked - the reps usually get a commission if they sign you up on the spot (I believe?).
It may involve a slight increase for inflation or it might involve taking a larger excess, but you should be able to negotiate something less than that quote (from another old-timer.....)

Hi Ian
Ta for the reply.
The problem is that up till now RH have not insisted in me having a "modern" car. Now they appear to have changed their policy and are insisting that I deem one of my classic cars as a modern.
I did go back to RH on the phone which is when I found this out. Their original quote for the coming year was the same as last year. Truth is I suppose that £500 for 3 cars is not too bad and I do get a decent breakdown insurance included.

Hi Dave, the annoying thing is that your premiums have increased significantly because of a change in the company policy, not because of any perceived increase in risk.
I would certainly try lots of the alternative companies offering classic vehicle insurance, but you are correct about having an "everyday" vehicle. This does seem to be a common question when seeking a quote.
Hope you get it sorted to your satisfaction.

Also, most insurance premiums have risen by significant amounts due to changes in the rules governing insurance companies whereby they have to offer new and renewal customers the same price.

It is still worth shopping around.
My MGB is with Hagerty and this years renewal is £160 on an agreed value with 3000 miles. It's been creeping up by around £5 per year.

How does £65 per annum fully comprehensive for a 1973 GT with 3 named drivers and 3000 miles limit sound? RAC breakdown coverage for £28 makes a grand total of £93 per annum which is £7 less than I paid last year with only 2 named drivers. When I tried to add an extra driver mid year they wanted £42, when I added the extra driver at renewal £0??

The insurer is KGM Motor and I went through A Plan Insurance in Bromsgrove. The car was insured at the end of November so the price is fairly recent. Hope this helps. Geoff
