Indicators issues

Post by Dullnote »

Hi needing some advice/ help .

I just changed indicator bulbs to LEDs , now when I start the car I can I see a flash through the lights just as the car starts, only for a split second.

Now when driving the car the indicators are playing up, sometimes not working other flashing very fast , then time work fine.

My thinking is the voltage stability unit could be the issue.

Sorry should say the car is MGB GT V8 1973

Autoelectrics are not my strong point so I am happy to be corrected, but here are my thoughts.

The flasher unit may be totally confused by the low current drawn by the LEDs. I think you may need to revert to good old tungsten, or make some mods to the flasher unit.

Sound sensible?

You need a flasher relay for LED bulbs. I've got them on my Land Rover and with the correct relay they work properly. Try Paul Goff Lighting.

Definitely need a flasher unit for LEDs . Another supplier , who knows his stuff, is Duncan at Classic Car LED Ltd. 0800 246 5678. (They have a very comprehensive web site).

Sorry should have been more clear, only changed indicator bulbs in the

My concern is the when starting the engine there is a fast flash on both indicator lights.

Regarding the relay, I change the dash lights on my own 1800 MGB with issues, changed nothing.

Thanks for the replies

Hi Allan

Yes should read the post before submitting.

The lights were only changed in the dash, however found the person had changed the flasher unit, with cheap Chinese one. I changed this out for quality unit and everything now works fine.

Just shows how quality units worth there money

Thanks

I'd highly recommend changing everything else on the car to LEDs if you've even half an inclination to - except the ignition warning light, which you can't.

The reason you shouldn't change the ignition warning light to LED is because the bulb won't draw enough current to excite the alternator and it won't charge unless a resistor is wired across the bulb and that's pointless as it will still draw the same current as a standard bulb.
