There's an article in the current issue of Practical Classics about compression problems and one is a cracked cylinder head. This can cause overheating or water loss but doesn't necessarily show on a compression test. When I did a test 1 cylinder was 5psi down on the other 3, well within the tolerance so I suspect the problem lies there. It's just a matter of removing the head and finding the fault.

I haven't removed it yet. I'll report when done. I suspect a crack but because it's modified to take MGC inlet valves it's unexchangeable. The MGOC sell Stage 2 heads outright and I believe they're done by Ivor Searle. Anyone had experience of this company?

I'm not sure if Peter Burgess sells modified heads. His website makes it look like he modifies customer's own.

Well the stock of decent uncracked heads might be diminished by now, but years ago when my head went to Peter and he found it cracked, he supplied a good head modified to "Fast Road" standard and very good it has been.

I contacted Peter Burgess but unfortunately he doesn't have any suitable cylinder heads.
