A member of the Series 2 Land Rover club has just had his Salisbury axle rebuilt by Hardy Engineering in Leatherhead and is very impressed with the service.

If you mark the nut/stud, measure from stud end to nut with dial gauge or vernier calliper and/or count turns, how can you get it back at any other point than where it started?
Now my problem was getting the nut off. My 'beast' (240v clarke impact wrench) which has never before failed me could not move it one bit.

On a Salisbury axle to start the collapse of a new spacer a 250ft lb torque wrench is needed. It's been proven that trying to mark the nut and flange relevant to each other is very hit and miss.
The only way I can think to do it is to be able to measure the torque required to undo the nut then retighten it to the same torque but that's not possible.
If the oil leak isn't very bad leave well alone or get it done professionally. Cheaper in the long run.
