Brake dust cover to stub axle assembly bolts

Post by Abbottd5 »

I purchased an exchange stub hub assembly and successfully fitted it.

However, when I came to fit the disc backplate/dustcover, I was only able to fit two of the four bolts. Two of the threads in the replacement hub assembly are either damaged or filled with paint and I can’t get any of the bolts to start. Incidentally, all four bolts fit in the good threads so I know the bolts aren’t damaged.

My solution is to re tap the the threads, but I don’t know what size tap to use.

I couldn’t find descriptions on Moss or Brown and Gammons’ websites.

I know it’s a long shot, but does anyone know what the thread size is?

Moss list the Screw Headed bolts as SH605041.
SH = Screw Head
6 = UNF
05 =5/16
04=1/2 inch long
1 = Zinc

Hi Charles, thanks for your very detailed answer.

I obviously need to revisit my Moss catalogue and make a thorough search.

Your answer is very much appreciated! Thank you!
