Does anyone know what this is?

Post by djgreen »

I’m not sure what this is for. 🤷🏼‍♂️
It’s located by the radiator and needs oiling!

I have one of these mounted in the same position as yours.

It is the compressor for air horns. The cut off large plastic pipe inthe right of your photo shoud provide compressed air to the air horns.

Verty effective warning system - makes the MOT Tester jump!

Definately not original - an after market add on.

Fitted mine back in 1992/3 time .

I fitted a set to a Wolseley 1500 I had. There were 5 trumpets which could be switched to sound together or to play a tune. Colonel Bogey was the most popular and probably the easiest to do. They were certainly effective.
I don't think it's legal now to have them set to play tunes. They have to sound together.

If it ain't original and not working - its going in the bin ! - (mind you, giving the MOT guy a fright sounds tempting 😂)

Maybe not a factory fit but definately a period original bolt on.

Mine was seized when given tome back in the early 90s so left it filled with oil for a few days - the compressor jumped back into life.

I guess finding the trumpets might take a while

A similar compressor with twin air horns was fitted to my '64 B when I bought it in 1968, I didn't like it as it was not instantaneous like an electric horn. By the time the compressor had worked, the danger had passed, so I went back to the original electric horn. The red trumpets of the air horns have since come in useful as funnels!

Well there is no delay with mine - work as soon as the horn push is touched
