Gearbox screw

Post by Kevin Prosser »

I was changing the gearbox oil on my 1972 MGB today and when I undid the drain plug I heard a clonk as something fell into the drip tray.

I found the attached small screw, which I presume must have come from inside the gearbox. I don’t know if it is something that has always been there, and maybe got accidentally put in during a previous rebuild. (although odd that it didn’t come out when I changed the oil about 5 yrs ago), or if it is something that has worked loose recently.

I’ve looked at the exploded diagrams in the Hayne’s manual and can’t see anything similar, and the gears are working fine, so maybe it was a ‘foreign body’ which has been hanging around in the bottom of the gearbox casing and has just worked its way along to the drain point.

I wondered if anyone who has rebuilt an MGB gearbox (with overdrive) recognises it?
