MGB Brake switches

Post by Chris.Wilkins »

During a recent trip to Gabbice Mare we noted that many of the MGB's attendind the MG's by the Sea week had faulty brake lights. Mostly due to failed brake switches in the hydraulic line. These can be changed without losing brake fluid by placing a piece of thin plastic underneath the brake fliud reservor cap and tightening it up during the change. However the commonly available switches are of poor quality. Tim Kelly of St Agnes in Cornwal can supply a European sourced switch which he claims is of superior quality and would be s useful spare. Welcome to the Forum Chris
I have recently fitted a manual switch to the brake pedal. This is not seen so under the bonnet / hood for our USA friends all looks standard.

RIchard Homer has also fitted a switch similar to that fitted to the original TF, as well as one of the Tim Kelly hydraulically actuated switches - belt and braces!!

John Here is a picture of mine the switch was bought of eBay.
Nothing has changed under the bonnet so it still looks original, hope this helps.

I found most of the brake light switches failed regularly on both my MGB and TD. I added a relay to both cars and have not had a switch failure in four years. Here is a link to an article on how to do it (from another forum...)
