Stage 2 Cylinder Head.

Post by Vic Butler »

After a protracted period of lurgy, hip replacement and keeping the Land Rover on the road, I now have decided that the long neglected MGB merits attention. The cylinder head is almost certainly the cause of the overheating because it's almost certainly to be cracked and because of that and also because it's highly modified with MGC inlet valves it's unexchangeable. Oselli stage 2 head is about £1,300 outright. Peter Burgess unfortunately only modify existing heads and don't carry spare ones so the other alternative is Ivor Searle. What is recommended?.

I would try Andy Jennings in Southampton and then get Peter Burgess to do his magic.

P.s. I would take it one step at a time, first make certain that the head you have really is cracked - report back and we can assist.

Thanks Ian. In Safety Fast there's an ad for Skiptune so I gave them a call. The man I spoke to is a cousin of Bryan Slark who did the original head. He suggested what you said and to let him know the outcome and he can do a head to Stage 2 and supply a proper Payen head gasket. Now just a matter of removing the head as all ancillaries have been removed. It'll have to be after the new electric garage door is fitted.
Although it's a rubber bumper car the cylinder head is a straight oil feed version.

Hi Vic,
i remember you raising the problem of your overheating some 2(?) years ago.
I can't recall whether a discussion was had over whether or not the thermostat was still in (& working) or whether it had simply been removed.
If removed , i believe MOSS recommend a blanking sleeve ( which they sell) should be inserted as overheating of the cylinder head can occur due to the effect on the coolant flow that may occur.
Glad to hear you are fully mobile again!
Cheers

Not mobile yet Charles as I still have to remove the head and find the cause but at least I've found where I can get a non exchange replacement and proper Payen head gasket.
As the engine would run stationary at 2,000 rpm, the gauge would go up, the fan would cut in and out when the temperature decreased I assume the thermostat was ok but it will be replaced .

Hi Vic
I was referring to your own health including hip replacement with regards to being mobile!!!!!
Hopefully you find the cause of the MGB overheating once the head is removed.
Cheers

Thanks Charles. Yes I am fully mobile now but got behind with other tasks but the Land Rover had its suspension completely replaced recently (I didn't do it, it can be a dreadful job) and once the new garage door is fitted I hope to resume with the B.
