o/d parts on filter

Post by waltmgb »

Took the cover off the o/d to change the filter and found large pieces of a brass ring. Appears about 1 3/4 inches in diameter and has 3 or 4 small slots in each side. How much trouble am I in?

Since no-one else has replied - I can't be sure what you have there but it sounds like a thrust washer or part of the clutch.
I'm afraid it sounds like an engine/gearbox out job to get the overdrive removed and sent to a specialist repairer. Does it still work by the way?

Thank you for the response. Yes, all still works. Had no idea there was any issue until I found the pieces. I thought it would probably be removal for repair but was thinking, as long as it was working, it might wait a bit if no more serious damage was imminent.

Hi Walt. I think it might be best to avoid the possibility of any major failure whilst driving, if that was a likely scenario.
I think I would contact a Laycock specialist and ask their advice. There used to be one at Killamarsh near Chesterfield, but Google should help there. They may well say that it will go on for miles in that condition 😀😀!

Just FYI. The company responded within 24 hours with the information I needed. Nice.

Thanks for the update, good to get feedback. Does it look like an overdrive out job and a bit of a rebuild?

Yes, rebuild on the horizon. They said it's a thrust washer and parts would slowly wear so will probably wait until late fall assuming no catastrophes before.
