Re: Sluggish acceleration

I put 20/50s engine oil in my dashpots. You need thickish oil to get the transient enrichment. I'm sure that's what the workshop manual recommends. Buy a strobe timing light and do your timing dynamically.

Re: Today in the garage

A voltmeter is very useful. I can see for instance when my revotech electric fan kicks in. You cant always hear it when you are motoring along. It doesn't come on if you can maintain in excess of 40 mph. I've been worrying, probably unnecessarily, about the output of my alternator. The gauge shows a...

Re: Best replacement engine

I had Peter give my cylinder head the Econotune treatment and I have a standard 252 deg period Indian made camshaft. I'm very pleased with how the car goes. I have fairly recently in mileage terms had my engine re-bored from standard to +0.040" so 1845 cc (I think, I cant be bothered to work it...

Re: Ignition Timing

Ignition timing is the single most critical setting in tuning a car for performance and economy. Most peoples cars are set too retarded. The factory setting were a good compromise for a standard car and if you set to that you wont be too far off optimum. Most of us have cars that have been modified ...

Re: Today in the garage

When I bought my 71 B it was fitted with an aftermarket centre console but with nothing in it except three dials - Voltmeter & Clock which are handy and an ammeter which had been connected with cooker cable from the starter motor (I've taken that wiring out). Suggestions of what to put in its pl...

Re: The first week of GT ownership

Your car looks really nice but I agree that the LE wheels look odd on a car of this vintage. I've got Minilite replicas on my 71 roadster because I didn't like the original Rostyles. I would have preferred wires but I don't trust the conversion kits after my friend had one come off on his Midget. Sw...

Re: More newbie questions: Crankcase breather and oil pressure gauge flickering

My oil pressure fluctuates but only at idle and only when hot. I had imagined that it was caused by the pressure relief valve shuttling. Your oil consumption and low ish oil pressure (mine is 65 psi) lead me to believe you engine is a bit tired. No need for immediate alarm, the B series will plod on...

Re: Fuel Pump

You can get a SU pump with electronics instead of the points. I bet Welsh MG in Rhostyllen can help you. I had my original pump pack up about 10 years ago on my way to the Arden Groups Heritage run. I got it off at the side off the road and cleaned the points with some wet&dry. Took about 20 min...

Re: Crankshaft pulley change

We cant have Americanisms here. Harmonic balancer indeed. The correct name for that part is torsional vibration damper which perfectly describes what it does. Its an absorber tuned to the crankshafts torsional natural frequency. This frequency is excited by harmonics of the firing torques of the eng...
