Re: Starter motor plastic cover removal

I think this thread needs putting to bed before I get completely addled!
Thanks to all for the comments. I'm going to give my 12v conversion a week or 2 before I finally decide.
If I go back to ballast, I'll certainly try out Michael's 5 pin relay suggestion.

Re: Starter motor plastic cover removal

This is what I have done so far. Piggy backed 12v to coil wire onto ignition relay terminal W1 (85). Split and insulated the 2 conjoined old green/white wires that were originally connected to the +coil. Everything is working. I've ordered the special relay with 87b terminal, but not sure if I will ...

Re: Starter motor plastic cover removal

Thanks for that Paul. Very interesting link which I have bookmarked. My car electrics knowledge is NIL. I've found a double throw relay with 87b terminal, but, I can't see the point of the double throw for the application under discussion. Why can't a simple piggyback connector on to 87 on the origi...

Re: Starter motor plastic cover removal

Finally got the car up and running on 12v coil. After another dud condenser and poor earthing of the battery negative. Just now I am taking the 12v to the coil from the w1 terminal on the ignition relay, and the car runs fine. I am wanting to include Michael Barclay's 5 pin relay. Michael's relay sh...

Re: Starter motor plastic cover removal

A direct 12v to the coil, and she started instantly. I could have knocked a connector off the solenoid when replacing the plastic cover, but I'm not even going to look. Could be the ignition relay I suppose. I'm going all 12v now. Fed up with blooming ballasts etc.

Re: Starter motor plastic cover removal

Well, this has turned into a marathon. Plenty of fuel at the carbs. Had to remake a couple crimp connectors at coil and to the distributor. Checked the points and timing. Called in no1 son who condemned the spark at plugs as hopeless. Reddish colour. He suggests trying coil off the Cortina, which we ...

Re: Starter motor plastic cover removal

Thanks Michael. Point taken about the possibility of damage to the solenoid. My assertion that the 2 terminals on the solenoid were permanently joined was not really meant to be taken seriouslly. Anyway, just back from my now non starting MGB. There's a spark at the plugs when cranking, so hopefully...
