Re: Testing overdrive solenoid

The only test you can do easily is the solenoid. You can't really hear the solenoid action on the LH Overdrive with it installed as it is inside the casing. As the gearbox is out of the car and drained of oil in your case, you can try energising the solenoid as you have done and at the same time use...

Re: Lever arm damper capacity

Hi Ian, I would agree with that link. When I upgraded the valves in my front dampers I bought a 500ml bottle of Penrite, and used a little over half of it. Penrite offer 2 versions; Shock Oil 1 for normal applications and Shock Oil 2, which is thicker, for competition applications. The bad news is t...

Re: London Ultra Low Emissions Zone extension

I can't find any advice from either TfL or in the press to suggest the a VoHI is liable to pay the charge. All I can find is it is an automatic detection (which probably uses the DVLA database). I assume therefore you haven't modified your MGB in a way that has rendered it liable for VED! I suggest ...

Re: Petrol additives

I did suffer from quite sudden and severe valve seat recession (over about 1000 miles) when we took the B to France in 2017, and this was despite using Castrol Valvemaster since I bought the car at the end of 2011, and running it on super unleaded. I think the underlying reason was constant speed cr...

Article about the Ron Gammons MGB JYH 770D

Attached is an article I have scanned about Ron Gammons MGB JYH 770D from the December 1989 Classic and Sports Car magazine. This is the sister car to Gerry Brown's MGB featured above, and mentioned in that article. It was written after the 1989 Pirelli Marathon, where Ron finished 5th and in 1990 h...

Re: Some details of Gerry Brown's FIA MGB

Hi Tom, I only have the picture that was in the article, and I've attached here a higher resolution version of that so you can see the detail more clearly. SDC13715.JPG . I do wish now that I had taken more pictures at the time. I can and a bit more detail though. The glovebox lid has been replaced ...

Re: Seat slat coating

I hadn't thought of that Ian! Was wondering what the purpose of the wooden slats was, so I left them out when I changed the seats. Mind you my car is now so noisy inside with the hardtop on, a bit more from the seats would be undetectable! The slats are now carefully stored with the original seats.

Re: Fuel Pump

If you replace it with a new SU pump it will be ethanol compliant - they have been for some years. I would agree with the above comments that the points type is best should it fail (as with ignition points). If you buy an alternative aftermarket type you need a pump with a capacity of 7 gallons per ...

Re: Front wing difference

The difference is at the screen end of the wing. The roadster version continues under the screen and has the rectangular hole for the screen pillars to pass through and then has a dog leg near the rear. The GT has the dog leg in front of the screen. So unfortunately you can't swap them. If you were ...
