Re: Starter motor plastic cover removal
Charles. Call me a cynic, but I suspect the green/white and red/white terminals on the solenoid are directly connected inside the solenoid. Fingers crossed the starter relay doesn't pack in, allowing what you mention to happen. If I'm right, when the car is running there will be a feedback of 6? vol...

Re: Starter motor plastic cover removal
Good idea Charles. At the moment I have got other jobs in hand on the car which preclude starting her up. Probably next week will try it. While I am on it, Why can't the 12v feed to the coil when starting be taken direct from the main red/white solenoid terminal? On my solenoid, the main brown wires...

Re: Starter motor plastic cover removal
Thanks Charles, The reason I wanted to get the cover off was because I had had slight starting problems which I had reported on here, where the engine only fired when the key was released. But the wiring appears to be OK, and the solenoid has the extra 12v take off for the coil during starter operat...

Re: Starter motor plastic cover removal
All sorted. Bit of heat plus brutal levering from underneath! I didn't want to force it if there were fasteners.
Thanks to all.
Thanks to all.

Re: Starter motor plastic cover removal
Thanks Michael. No fasteners then. I'll try the heat this afternoon, and report back.

Starter motor plastic cover removal
I spent an hour yesterday trying to remove the plastic cover with no success. Now I am ancient and do not have a lot of strength in my hands any more. Is there a simple way of removing it, and are there any fasteners to undo. 1978 BGT. The starter is mounted with the solenoid at the bottom and I hav...

Re: Brakes continually need re-bleeding / reservoir needs topping up
Or simply remove the servo and connect up the pipework without one. In my opinion the standard servo makes very little difference to the brakes anyway. Plus you will have a firmer pedal. After all, the first nine years of MGBs had no servo, and the brakes were identical to the ones on the servoed c...

Re: Ignition problem - not MGB
Thanks Vic. That description pretty well ties in with what I thought. It shouldn't really matter which way round the low tension wire and capacitor wire are put. Anyway, yesterday I fitted the new coil, and tried it - zilch. Then I fitted the new condenser and vroom vroom. So it was the capacitor. T...

Re: Ignition problem - not MGB
Thanks Ian, I've looked hi and lo online for a definitive description of the wiring detail under the distributor cap, but can't find anything conclusive. If the wiring on the pivot post was shorting - easily done - that would result in what you have described.
