Re: Hot coil

How long is the ignition being left on? It's not a good idea to do so as the coil will overheat. If you have to leave the ignition switched on for a long period without the engine running then the feed wire to the positive coil terminal should be disconnected to avoid this happening.

Re: Help with ignition light and alternator please

The ignition light extinguishes when the voltage on both sides of its wiring is equal, nothing to do with polarity. An LED bulb behaves the same but draws insufficient current to excite the alternator. From memory the 2 LED headlight bulbs in my Series 3 Land Rover draw about 2 amps each so a much l...

Re: Help with ignition light and alternator please

An LED bulb in the ignition warning light doesn't draw enough current to "excite" the alternator into charging unless a resistor is included across the terminals. My Series 3 Land Rover has LED bulbs except the ignition light for that reason.

Re: clutch bleed issue

Clutch hydraulics can be notoriously difficult to bleed. Try using a vacuum bleed system, much safer than a pressure bleeding system.
Otherwise as Ian suggested it could be a faulty master or slave cylinder.

Re: What’s the worst job on an MG

Sorting out the electrics when the starter motor on a rubber bumper B is replaced made even more difficult when the replacement motor doesn't have the terminal for the wire to the coil which bypasses the ballast resistor when the starter is running. I haven't had to do it yet but it seems a great nu...

Re: Stage 2 Cylinder Head.

Thanks Charles. Yes I am fully mobile now but got behind with other tasks but the Land Rover had its suspension completely replaced recently (I didn't do it, it can be a dreadful job) and once the new garage door is fitted I hope to resume with the B.

Re: Stage 2 Cylinder Head.

Not mobile yet Charles as I still have to remove the head and find the cause but at least I've found where I can get a non exchange replacement and proper Payen head gasket. As the engine would run stationary at 2,000 rpm, the gauge would go up, the fan would cut in and out when the temperature decr...

Re: Stage 2 Cylinder Head.

Thanks Ian. In Safety Fast there's an ad for Skiptune so I gave them a call. The man I spoke to is a cousin of Bryan Slark who did the original head. He suggested what you said and to let him know the outcome and he can do a head to Stage 2 and supply a proper Payen head gasket. Now just a matter of...

Stage 2 Cylinder Head.

After a protracted period of lurgy, hip replacement and keeping the Land Rover on the road, I now have decided that the long neglected MGB merits attention. The cylinder head is almost certainly the cause of the overheating because it's almost certainly to be cracked and because of that and also bec...
