Re: Alternator not charging/ignition light not on

Vic & Geoff, I posted up the 1973 wiring diagram as an attachment to my post of 4.59pm yesterday. If you click on the link ending ".pdf " you will see the wiring on the ignition switch. It also shows why, with the ignition switch in the "on" position (not cranking & befor...

Re: Alternator not charging/ignition light not on

Geoff, You appear to have checked the continuity between the bulb terminal & the brown /yellow terminal on the old alternator, but have you checked (without the ignition on ) whether there is continuity between the brown / yellow (Ind) terminal on the alternator & ground? If there isn't then...

Re: Alternator not charging/ignition light not on

Geoff, With the ignition switch in the "on position" , not cranking, + power should then flow from the terminal on the back of the ignition switch to the "IND" socket within the plug that attaches to the alternator - by connecting a temporary crocodile clip or probe to the plug, ...

Re: Alternator not charging/ignition light not on

Geoff, Assuming all the wires are now connected to the right terminals of the ignition switch i am still suspicious of the integrity of the alternator itself. Rick Astley's excellent MGB Electrical Systems book refers to possible causes for the ignition (charge) warning lamp not lighting: - 1) Bulb ...

Re: Alternator not charging/ignition light not on

The ignition bulb serves a purpose in agitating the alternator into charging. The bulb lights up when there is a difference in Voltage on each side of the bulb (or the ignition is totally off & hence any supply to he bulb is eliminated). When the ignition switch is on the "on position"...
