Re: Smoking

Hi Alex, I am always a bit wary of claims an engine has been reconditioned. It is often reconditioned in eyes of the owner, so unless the claim can be supported with receipts for the work. In the list of things you mention above that the owner has done last year, there is quite a lot of cylinder hea...

Re: Smoking

In the picture of Gerry Brown's engine above, I wasn't sure where the centre venting hose was connected. On the cover of Peter Burgess' book on power tuning MGB engines, the picture is of Gerry's engine as well, and it shows this pipe connects to another tappet cover with an elbow pipe.

Re: Smoking

I've been following this on the Facebook Page and here. There is nothing wrong with the way the breathers have been connected to the catch tank, and all of that appears to me to be working fine. The catch tank is vented using the pipe that goes down the back of the radiator, and is doing its job as ...

Re: cooling fan sensor fitting

Hi Chris, It depends on your chassis number. Up to GHN/D 511290 there was just a sealing ring. From GHN/D 511291 onwards there was also a clip. See this extract from the Moss Catalogue Fan Sensors.jpg Parts 4 and 5 are for the earlier cars, and 2,3 and 6 are for later cars. There was also a change o...

Re: unleaded petrol, 95 or 99

To deal with Remy's original question - My Drivers Handbook (for GHN4 and 5 or GHD4 or 5 cars) gives the recommended Octane Rating as 98 octane or above, so 4* as a minimum and 5* ideally in those days. In the 1960s most garages sold 2*, 3*, 4* and 5* fuel - mostly by the pump mixing 2* and 5* in di...

Re: More newbie questions: Crankcase breather and oil pressure gauge flickering

I'm not sure why but many (if not all) seem to do this - mine included! It might be down to the rotor design of the oil pump causing pulsing in the oil system at low revs. If the pressure comes up as soon as the revs are raised, I don't think there is much to worry about. They seem to do it more whe...

Re: Electronic Ignition, yes or no?

For me NO! I've had several failures over the years, and seen them fail on other peoples cars as well, and they always seem to fail when you are miles from home. When they do it is instant, and you can't fix them at the roadside, unless it is something obvious like a wire fallen off. With points you...

Re: Insurance

I attach a copy of a newsletter from my insurers, Heritage, which explains how the Agreed Value works. It might not be how you think it will work!!!! It is most important that you have the correct Agreed Value, and remember that this is not the value of the car as any work on the car after and accid...

Re: Threaded holes under front 'chassis' legs?

I think they sound like the mounting holes for anti roll bar brackets. The anti roll bar was an optional extra on early roadsters.
