And don't forget you'll need two....
I run the GT on Super and even though it has hardened valve seats, I still use Millers fuel additive in it.

Re: What transmission oil to use
A Salisbury rear axle is fitted and Hypoid gear oil must be used in them due to the sliding way the crown wheel and pinion mesh 20/50 is ok in the gearbox and overdrive but don't use any additives like Molyslip which will kill the overdrive uni directional clutch. Changing a leaking pinion seal is ...

Re: What transmission oil to use
I used engine oil in my 1800 gearbox, as recommended.
NAPA 20w50 mineral oil.
The rear diff on the 1800 requires gear oil
NAPA N3031L 80W90 Mineral oil

Re: 1970 MGB collets
When stripping the head on my MGB last year, it had the O ring seals. They were clearly original and whilst intact, were as hard as steel, so serving no useful purpose.
New O rings came with the head gasket set, but I replaced them with the modern cap type.

Re: Insurance
Also, most insurance premiums have risen by significant amounts due to changes in the rules governing insurance companies whereby they have to offer new and renewal customers the same price. It is still worth shopping around. My MGB is with Hagerty and this years renewal is £160 on an agreed value w...

Re: Overheating
In the MG world PAYEN head gaskets seem to be 'de rigeur' but I couldn't get one when rebuilding the B last year.
They seem to be more readily available now : https://mgbhive.co.uk/product/11-geg116 ... asket-set/
I just used a normal copper gasket and it's holding up ok.

Re: Overheating
I assume that you've checked the overflow tank? Our Midget 1500 was repeatedly overheating and spitting water out of the overflow tank cap. We replaced the cap, checked hoses, new water pump and just about everything else suggested. We even changed the head gasket just in case, but none of that fixe...

Re: SU-HIF carbs idle speed
Could the fast idle screws be holding the idle speed high?
In other words, is there play in the choke cable when the choke handle is fully in?
Also, is the accelerator cable properly seated in its ferrule?
