Temporarily Exporting A Car - Impact on Insurance and Value

Hello, I’m relocating to the Channel Islands for work. As it will be for over 12 months and I’ll be classed as a resident, local laws require me to register the car and affix local registration plates. I don’t plan to live in the Channel Islands permanently, so in due course the MGB will be reimport...

Re: Old Residue behind Driver Dashboard (renewing car bodywork)

It looks like seam sealant or stonechip treatment. Possibly factory applied but it could have been done by a previous owner if they happened to have the remains of an aerosol left over from coating the sills or inside the wheelarches etc.. I cant see anything here for concern, its not going to flak...

Re: Old Residue behind Driver Dashboard (renewing car bodywork)

It doesn’t feel like fire damage (I have some experience in that regard). I’ve added two more photos from slightly different angles. One backs up the consensus view emerging that it’s not not brake fluid (the incrustation would have come out of the opening closed off by the rubber cover). The other ...

Re: Old Residue behind Driver Dashboard (renewing car bodywork)

Richard: I did consider underseal as part of my rust prevention theory. But it’s solid (unlike many modern underseal types I’ve seen) and doesn’t resemble the (old) underseal used on the rest of the car. Ian: Solid, and has been since I got the car back in 2019. I suspect I could chisel it off bits ...

Old Residue behind Driver Dashboard (renewing car bodywork)

Hi all, Having spent much of the last couple of years distracted by work, I’m beginning to assess jobs that need doing on the car. (Near the) top of the list is hunting down any rust that might be spreading out of sight and renewing the anti-rust protection that I think was last done in 1989. I’ve b...

Re: Dealing with rivets that won’t be drilled!

Chris - thanks. That was the missing piece of the puzzle. The rivets on the lower hinge mechanism must have been a different metal - hence the drill bits worked. Stephen - very useful to have the RPM number (most advice online just says slow). For information (in case anyone else ever reads this thr...

Re: Dealing with rivets that won’t be drilled!

In addition to good quality bits it's worth investing in a serious drill, if you haven't got one already. The cordless ones from Makita are excellent, although not cheap. I’ve heard good things about Matika’s before. My drill is a rival brand but it did a fabulous job on the first two rivets (holdi...

Re: Dealing with rivets that won’t be drilled!

Thanks Ian, Paul, Paul - I must admit I’d hoped I’d be able to get the rivets out without removing the glass behind them, so going for them from the other side isn’t an option for now. Assuming another solution doesn’t appear soon though… I may have to lean how to remove and refit the glass and get ...

Dealing with rivets that won’t be drilled!

So I’ve hit a ‘road bump’ in my efforts to replace the broken hinge on my roadsters quarter light (ventilator glass). I was able to drill out the rivets holding the lower ‘female’ part of the hinge with relative ease. However the rivets holding (what remains of) the upper ‘male’ hinge have defeated ...

Re: Can’t refit Distributor!

Ian, You are absolutely right: the Distributor that came out was a 45D4 and the replacement was a 25D4. I’ll pull out and reseat as you suggest and will edit this post to confirm the outcome. Thanks for the D&G David Ian, Peter, Thank you again for the D&G. I followed Ian’s recommendation i...
