nothing wrong with hif4's. in fact the spindles wear much better than hs carbs due to spring arrangements and that's the point where carbs wear the most. just like any carb, they need to be clean, and adjusted to work well. 17 years standing (and were they drained when car was put away?) will not do...

If you drill stainless too fast it 'case hardens' and you will be very lucky if you manage to drill it out after that. It just goes so hard it will blunt a drill quite easily. The way to drill stainless is *slowly*, and by that I mean in a pillar drill - at about 200rpm for what you are drilling siz...
