Newbie - Can't open Bonnet & other Q's.

Post by halfbob »

Hi, new member here. Just started my "retirement project"; restoring a '77 RB Roadster that's been in family since new but left deteriorating outside under a tarp for 25 years. Body work seems in remarkably good condition considering it's ill treatment. I've always worked in engineering but auto-mechanics isn't my field so plan is to do the "donkey work", like stripping it down to the bare shell, then use others for specialist tasks like respray, engine etc.. but hopefully learn something along the way. Wonder if anyone can help with a couple of questions?...

Can you recommend a good Manual for this project? I've got a couple of books, Haynes "Restoration Manual" by Lindsay Porter and Brooklands Books "Owners Workshop Manual '68-'81", but so far anything I've needed to look up either hasn't been covered or not for my model.

I'm failing at the first hurdle as I can't get the Bonnet open! The release "pull" (Footwell on Passenger side) just won't budge. I found the instructions on internet for trying to release it with a metal rod through the Diamond Grill behind the Rubber Bumper, but to no avail. Even borrowed a Borescope to try and see what's happening but all I can see is plenty of corrosion around the area where the Lock Pin may be! Not sure what my next step should be. Maybe cut the Diamond Grille away to give me more room?

And finally, has anyone ever considered attempting to rewire using CAN bus (That's a biggy. Thought I'd slip it in at the end ;-) )

Thanks for reading and look forward to being part of your "community".
