MGB GT A PILLAR GONE...

Hi. New to the forum as is my ownership of the MGB GT. It's a little worse than I thought when I bought it as I have dug deeper. Rust being the main issue here. The sills etc. I have started but a problem that I hadn't thought of encountering was the A pillar corrosion being so extensive. I'll try to enclose a photo. Basically I could do with a drivers side A pillar repair panel. Does anyone know of a small repair panel available? I have seen a large roof/A pillar both sides repair panel but the cost is enormous. I've tried scrap yards and they are reluctant to cut off the A pillars as they try to sell the shell complete. Any help or advise would be appreciated. Ha ha I'm not scrapping it either!! Thanks in advance. Garry

The major supplier of panels andbodyshells is British Motor Heritage of Witney.

They supply their ownand Steelcraft panels to the trade.

I cannot see your need intheir lists but best you look.

Hi. Thanks both for your response. I have looked at eBay and saw the pillar for sale. Not sure I want to pay £90 for something which already has a hole in it. I've been researching repair practices and watched a few videos. Think I'm going to attempt repairing myself using small pieces of steel using the opposite corner as a template for angles and curvature etc. Definitely going to be tricky but I'd rather try than not! However I will keep looking at other scrap yard offers which come along might get lucky. Will keep you posted. Thanks again.

Unfortunately if they are not available as a repair panel, the used parts dealers can ask any price they like!
Try Andy Jennings on 01489 790611 or 07710 138262 to see if he can help.
Wheeler Dealers did a similar repair on a Mazda MX5 some time ago. If you can find it you might get some inspiration for a diy repair. Remember though that Ed China is pretty good at his job!

I've just found the Wheeler Dealers Mazda MX5 video. See: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5hlhr4, and the windscreen A pillar repair starts at around 13.00min. Hope it helps.

Ok. So I’ve made a start. It’s pretty tough going as there isn’t much to weld onto. I’ve got hold of a few forming blocks for the sheet metal I’ve got and so far, seems to be going ok. Lots more to do but trying to keep positive.

Obviously, I’ll be laying on filler, but expected that anyway. The tricky bit is going round the corner and into a vertical orientation and up the A pillar. Great!

Ok. So I started plugging away at this repair and have had a mare as usual. But slowly making progress. The problems are in the forming of the plates to be welded and profiling to give a moderately good appearance. At the end of the day, no matter what I do it's going to need some filler to achieve an acceptable appearance.
