Locking Wheel Nut Removal

Hello,

I've lost the locking wheel bolt key for my 74 MGB GT.

There seem to be a number of tools around to get them off but I just wondered if anybody has dealt with the same problem before and can recommend the best tool to use.

I am not bothered about damaging the bolt as I will replace all four with standard once I have got them off.

Many thanks

Richard

Hi Richard
I think you will get some ideas from here: http://www.jamesandtracy.co.uk/howto/lo ... emoval.htm . In most cases these tips are for wheel nuts deeply recessed into front wheel drive alloys, but because the nuts used on Rostyle wheels stick out a long way from the wheel itself, I think you would get them off using a good pair of mole grips. An alternative would be to carefully use an angle grinder to fashion a hexagonal head on the nut and use a suitable socket.

Many thanks Peter,

That's a very helpful link.

I'll need to invest in a more substantial pair of Mole grips but I'll certainly give that a go.

Appreciate your help

Richard

If all else fails, my usual method with any tricky bolt or stud is to mig weld another nut or bolt onto it. The heat also has a very beneficial effect on seized threads! Just remember to disconnect the battery and the alternator before welding.

Ian, Peter

Managed to force a socket on in the end - wheels are off!

Thanks both for your help
