Roadster Windscreen to Body Seal

I have to replace the cracked windscreen on my car and have a good second hand unit to refit. Before doing so the seal which fits in the windscreen lower rail and abuts the body must be renewed.

Having just spent 2 fruitless hours with plenty of oil and waxoyl, I am defeated!!!!!

Can anyone give me any tips on how to get the new seal into the groove on the rail or, failing that, point me in the direction of a supplier of refurbished screen and frame assemblies that are already fitted with new seals?

Thanks in desperation and anticipation, David.

Hi Ian,
The online advice of MGB Stuff might help you.
Go to: http://www.mgb-stuff.org.uk/bodytext.htm#rscreen
Then scroll down the page until you get to get to the section titled 'Body Seal'. Note it starts with 'New body seals are a nightmare'!
This also contains a link to a John Twist video which shows how it is done by an expert (a windscreen fitter!).
Take a read and a look at the video. It might help you, but also taking it to a windscreen specialist such as National Windscreen or Auto Windscreens to see if they can help. Neither of these though are likely to have anyone locally as they normally only fit glued in screens these days! If you have insured the B you could try your insurer to see who they recommend. You will of course have to pay to have it done though, but sometimes money is the line of least resistance!!

Brought my screen from him years ago it was cheaper for the insurance company to let me fit an exchange unit rather than the "stick eem in" firms mess about with some thing they didn't know how to deal with. Took my old frame in part exchange

Peter/George, thank you for your replies.

I read the MGB stuff write up which was very useful and opted, as they suggested, to use my existing bottom seal which was in relatively good condition and importantly already in the correct profile!
I also made a minor adjustment to the bottom rail guide by cutting 2x small slots into it in the centre section. These allowed me to fed in the seal one side at a time pushing outwards to the pillars, I was then left with only a small portion in the centre to ease in with my trusted windscreen rubber tool ( the American screen fitter in the you tube clip may be an expert but mere mortals have no chance of replicating his actions imho ).

Next step will be to offer up screen for refixing accompanied by lots of sealer — I sense more frustration on the way! Cheers, David.

I found it best to put the sealer on after the screen has been refitted to the car, otherwise you get sealer all over the scuttle panel whilst trying to fit the screen. Then add the sealant from inside the car paying particular attention to where the rubber sits on top of the wing to scuttle filler strip, and in the corners. Wipe off any excess before the sealant sets or you will have to trim with a blade and that will probably damage the paint. I also added some sealer to the bottom of the rubber pads the screen pillar sits on, as water can enter the car by creeping under the pads.
