MGBLE rear brake springs

Post by Craig Harvey »

Hi, new member here.
Does anyone know if late model MGBs have 3 pull off springs, making total 4 no. I have queried this with MGOC and Moss and they say all models from '62-'80 were all the same with 2 pull off springs and 1 handbrake lever spring making total 4 no. I am not convinced with their replies. I will have to pull a drum off but not in minus temperatures !
Thanks in anticipation.

Hi Craig, and welcome. Take a look at the Moss website - there are exploded diagrams of all the parts, and Moss will send you a hard copy of the catalogue if you ask - well worth getting. Brakes are here - http://www.moss-europe.co.uk/shop-by-mo ... rakes.html

Thanks for your reply, Ian. I have a Moss catalogue. I was asking this question about pull off springs because 3 no are mentioned in:-
1.Paul Hunt's "MGB-Stuff" website . Brake shoe web page.
2.Haynes manual-"Note the 3 springs on later vehicles" in the brake section.
But neither go into more detail or show a photo. That's why I am a bit confused.
(NB:I refer to pull off springs as the ones that pull the shoes off the drum ,where as the handbrake lever spring is something else.)

Well, the sole function of the 3 springs is to pull the brake shoes away from the drum, so there are 2 which operate against the hydraulic mechanism, and one which operates against the cable handbrake. So 3 in total, but all are "pull-off" springs.
Hope that clears things up,
