PREPARATION FOR SPRING RUN - Early starter motor removal

How many issues can one car have, just having been laid up for less than a year! This time the starter motor suddenly decided to spin freely when the ignition was turned. Closer inspection involved the spring assembly at the end of starter motor coming off in my hand. The starter motor will have to come off.
As Technical Advisor I have been asked a number of times as to how to remove the starter motor. The answer is – It depends. On MK 2 MGBs (Late 1967 on) it is quite easy as the starter motor is smaller and the oil filter housing is mounted differently. On the early cars this is the list of items needed to be removed to allow the starter motor to be lifted upwards through the engine bay (it cannot go downwards unless the engine mount is undone and the engine is jacked up):
1. Distributor
2. Oil Filter
3. Oil filter housing
4. Coil
5. Coil mounting bracket
It turns out that the roll pin holding the spring assembly to the shaft had sheared and the woodruff key had disappeared completely. Having obtained the parts assembly was straight forward and LAF717F, following an oil and filter change is now ready for the Spring Run.
