Horny problem - horn don’t work

Hi
Have a problem where up til recently the horn worked - now it don’t. I have stripped down the horn assembly on the steering wheel and think that i have found the problem. With the horn push off there is a hexagonal brass spring loaded button which upon removal has been found to be taped up with insulating tape- obviously a problem in the past. Upon further investigation this brass button is held inside a plastic tube with another smaller brass button at the other end. The spring no doubt acts to keep these apart to make electrical contact with other parts. Attached (soldered) to each brass button are 2 pieces of wire which I assume should be one piece of wire electrically connecting both buttons. If that is the case how do I reconnect the two ends which join inside the plastic tube. Help please.
PS. I have heard the joke about the Irish Gynocologist who tried to paint his hall through the letter box. Not helpful!!
Best regards Geoff
