Window Winder Handles

Post by Bumpa »

The plastic winder handles on my MGB are tight up against the covering of the door cards so that turning them is marking the vinyl. I have tried putting a large washer inside the handle but that has the effect of disengaging the handle from the hexagon on the mechanism.

I notice that on the RV8 the handle is spaced away from the door card - see photo. Is this part available, and would it fit an MGB? Alternatively has anyone any other suggestions to space the handle just a couple of mm away from the vinyl?

There are a couple of known spacers.

I have some from an interceptor. Metal

Or you can get plastic ones from https://sites.google.com/view/moderntou ... authuser=0

Hope this helps

Paul, that's really helpful. Thanks. I didn't know such things were available. I note that the ones from the US are 3D printed. I have a 3D printer but am not too clever with design programmes. I must have a go at those.

Try Manek, he 3D prints the spacers really good quality and reasonably priced.

Not sure if this will help, but the original fitting of these winders always had a large fibre(?) washer underneath them. These stopped the handle directly touching the door card. I can post a photo of the original fitting if you wish?

Thanks Ian. I have tried inserting a washer between the handle and the hexagon but to achieve enough clearance the handle no longer contacts the hexagon securely. The car has aftermarket chrome handles, so maybe that's the problem.

I am going to try and make spacers like Paul recommended. Having had a look at my design software it should be simple enough to get the 3D printer to do it. I'll let you all know how I get on.

Mike, the original washers fitted around the outside of the underneath of the handle, and prevented a direct contact of the handle on the door card. They weren't between the handle and the hexagon.
Apologies if you know all that already!

Feeling rather pleased with myself as I mastered Designspark and have printed the window handle spacer as shown. I have used some light grey PLA that I happened to have as my car has grey trim, but it could be printed in any colour. Its a bit pale in colour but looks fine to me and took 2 hours to print. It spaces the handle out by 5mm and seems ideal for the job. I had to use longer screws, 3/4 inch instead of 1/2 inch.
