That figures Vic.

On the Bentley 1978 and later cars diagram it shows some weird wiring at the ignition coil/distributor bit incorporating a "distributor resistor". God knows how it all works. I wonder if a dud resistor here could account for my fluctuating voltage readings when cranking. If this resistor is built into the solenoid heaven help us (me).

I suspect it is Dave. If you have to get a new starter motor make sure it's got the IGN terminal.
I think the resistor you're referring to is the restrictive wire for the ballast resistor system. Is it a series of zig zags?
