No worries thanks for the thought though.
I bought a new rotor arm and cap through MGOC they did ask what year did I purchase it as the newer ones (programmable 123) are different.

Right, here goes update 1

checked 123 dizzy - NEW cap, pin inside jammed permanently up - not spotted when fitted πŸ™„ so cap U/S
Timing slightly out requires tweaking, however, 123 locked in solid pry bar would not shift it so even bigger pry bar initiated 😑
Air leaking around rear carb manifold 🀬
NEW spark plug leads - no 3 arcing on heater valve 🀯

123 dizzy replaced with 45 dizzy and re- timed, just as well I had a perfectly good one in the garage spares boxπŸ™‚
Replaced NEW faulty leads with original working leads - now no arcing πŸ˜ƒ
On order- manifold and carb gasketsπŸ˜‘
Hopefully when everything has been fitted and balanced it should run as it used to - well hopefully better- watch this space....

Hi Steven, thanks for posting back - most folk don't seem to bother, but posting back is what makes a forum valuable😊😊.

Sounds like excellent progress, fingers crossed it leads to a good conclusion! Multiple small problems can be extremely tricky to solve and lead to lots of false trails.

No problem Ian, sometimes by posting solutions to your own difficulties it can help others.
Just frustrating that when you purchase new items they turn out to be faulty,

Check and recheck all new parts before fitting!!

Will update again when new parts arrive and fitted.

At last a perfect running car πŸ€—
Now time to own up....
Problem of the air leak turned out to be a washer (don’t ask how it got there as I haven’t a clue!!) behind the heat shield on the lower bolt.. this caused the shield to twist and not seal properly and blow the gasket apart.
