Rear main oil seal for MGB 18GG engines

Post by Jim Haines »

Does anybody have any knowledge/tips about changing the rear main oil seal on an 18GG engine? It is a standard unit, fitted to an automatic transmission box which is also being removed to replace the sump gasket at the same time.

Although this engine was fully rebuilt 24 years ago it has only done 8,500 miles since. In that time has any modification/development occurred that we should perhaps know about (i.e. as has happened for the MGA)?

If anybody has any information that would help I would be very grateful - we expect to do this in about 2 weeks time if we can get the bits we need.

Jim, I believe the oil seal is the same on the auto box as the manual box, the seals fits onto the engine backplate.
Hope this helps
