Mgb speedometer

Post by Norrie mccredie »

My speedometer on my mgb reaches 40 mph. But will go no further no-matter what speed I do.
Any suggestions would be welcome.

If it runs up to 40mph it suggests that the speedo cable is fitted and working reasonably correctly, and the problem is therefore with the speedo. You could try a small amount of lubrication down the cable from the speedo end, but I would have thought you really need a new speedo head.
Make sure you get the right one - there is more than one type out there.......

Thanks Jim , I will take your advice and have the speedo checked out first.

Hi Norrie,
Getting the speedo head checked might prove to be as expensive as getting it overhauled. Either way these people will be able to help you:
http://www.speedycables.com/
or
http://www.jdo1.com/
These people might take a look at it and knock the cost of the investigation off the overhaul if you go ahead.

If you buy a new one then it might be worth considering keeping the old one so you can verify the mileage. A new one or an overhauled one is likely to much the same price!
