MGB GT Tailgate alignment

Post by Chrismh »

Could really use some help here, just putting the car back together after extensive panels replacement including floor & boot, just painted & so far gone well with doors & bonnet alignment, it is a 79 car, the tailgate hinges are handed, marked LH & RH, i assume this is looking from the rear of the car? When i try this the tailgate hits th roof on the way to closing, in fact it cant be closed, tried to fasten the hinges to the roof as far out as possible, do i try to elongate, read about shims between gate & hinges does anyone know please, tearing my hair out & there isnt much left anyway. Thanks , Chris

Chris,
whereabouts are you? Easiest solution might be to see someone with a BGT? I have one, near Edinburgh?

I had a look in the workshop manual and all it says about refitting the tailgate is to align it with the body before tightening the hinge screws.
