Mgb rear fog light

Post by Ian M Crozier »

I wish to wire in a rear fog light as seen on late MGB's. I own a 1978 R/B and see that the rear clamping plate has threaded holes already there....question...what size bolt fits there and does anyone know where I can obtain fitting brackets ?
Many thanks in advance

Hi Ian
All the parts are readily available from the main suppliers. For example see here:
https://www.ukmgparts.com/catalogue/mgb ... enses-rear
But similar can be obtained from Moss, Rimmer and MGBhive.
I'm not sure if some of the additional features added to the late cars are held on with metric nuts and bolts, but you can order the correct bolt as well.
Remember to be legal the rear fog light must either be wired so it can only come on with dipped headlights or you need a warning light that lights up when it is on and you can easily see.

Thank you Peter. I reside in the USA and I have found that none of my main suppliers of MGB goodies stock that particular lamp item or fittings. I have duly ordered what Imneed from Brown & Gammons who are a name I had heard briefly but wasn't aware they were MG people.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.........Ian Crozier

Hi Ian
I would guess the items are probably for European legislation so not fitted to US spec cars.
Brown and Gammons history is steeped in MG with Ron Gammons and Gerry Brown being involved in racing MGs from the mid to late 1960s. I raced against them for many years in MG T-Types which became highly developed in the UK thanks mainly to Gerry's engine building skills which led to 150bhp XPAG/XPEG engines running on SUs. Both were very difficult to beat! Ron and Gerry set up Brown and Gammons in the early 1970s I think it was. Gerry left the company after a few years and now runs Merton Motorsport specialising in competition preparation with an emphasis on engines and gearboxes. Ron is now Chairman of the company, and day to day running of the business is down to Malcolm Gammons - MG shows how much they like MGs I guess!
Best wishes for Christmas and 2017

Is there a requirement to fit a relay in the circuit for a rear fog lamp, or can you take the light feed straight from the switch?

Peter thank you for the interesting biography of Brown & Gammons. One is never too old to learn something new. You are probably correct in that the rear fog light was not produced on American versions, however I noticed the photo on page 102 of Clausagers "Original MGB" and decided that was a really necessary addition for my B. I have placed an order for the items and look forward to installing them. US legislation is maybe not quite as strict on collector vehicles so hopefully no-one will object.
Again, Merry Christmas........Ian

There is not so much a requirement for a relay as to make sure the circuit is fused. Rear fog lights use a 21W bulb, the same as the indicators, brake lights and the reversing lights and non of these have relays on the MGB. If you don't want to break into the loom, then fit an inline fuse for the light. That way if someone runs into the back of the car when the light is on you will minimise the risk of an electrical fire. However if they run into the back of you when the light is on you have to question its effectiveness!!!!
