Re: MGB differential gear swap?

Another question - for anyone who has done this job - renewing the differential thrust washers. I've just replaced the 4 thrust washers on the differential wheels and the differential pinions (sun and planet wheels in the diff if you prefer that terminology). All went very smoothly thanks to the sev...

Re: MGB differential gear swap?

Thanks again Peter. Just finished stripping down my two spare axles (in addition to the one on the B) and so have a selection of parts to examine and select from. One of the axles I've had in the garage since the 1980's and the gears in there seem to be the least worn (as you might expect - probably...

Re: MGB differential gear swap?

Thanks Peter. I have an earlier edition of the MGB Restoration Guide which details how to replace the thrust washers in the diff. Can you tell me if the later editions (post 1984) give any advice on replacement of the gears themselves? I have everything dismantled and have new thrust washers, but am...

MGB differential gear swap?

Just sorting out my '72 BGT rear end "clonk" - done it once before (many years ago) but now required again after around 116000 miles. Previously I just replaced the thrust washers - 2 x bronze and 2 x fibre/composite, but this time I'm wondering if I should swap over the gears as well? (2 ...

warning about hydraulic fluid leaks!

I have a '72 BGT and a '61 MK1 Midget (lucky me!) and have recently replaced the master cylinders (brake/clutch) on both of these cars - the midget master cylinder was sold as an "OE" piece of equipment and both had "Lockheed" moulded into the plastic filler cap. However - and th...

Re: Rear axle whine

Hi Jim, I've not got any easy answer for you I'm afraid, but maybe some words of comfort! I've had a 1972 BGT for nearly 40 years and still on the same axle. Always had a bit of a noisy axle including clunks - which were lessened by replacing the cup shaped thrust washers (an easy job really) and a ...

Re: Tyre sizes

http://www.etyres.co.uk/how-to-change-your-tyre-size/ Jim, this is probably too late for you to use now, but there is an on-line calculator which you can use to calculate the rolling circumference of tyres, and compare different tyre sizes. This should allow you to get what you want, either a close ...

Re: Rostyle Wheels

Although my Rostyle wheels have been refurbished now, I do remember them in original condition when I bought the BGT in 1978. I would agree with Adrian on the paint finish - as best as I can recall!!

Re: MGB rear hubs and tightening torques?

Yes, thanks Dave, that footnote was why I did tighten further, but using a torque wrench to check just how tight resulted in that reading of 185/190 lbft so That surprised me a little! Interestingly the American MG Forum members have suggested both alternative actions - some saying it was fine to to...

MGB rear hubs and tightening torques?

I've just had the half shaft and bearing out of one side of my '72 BGT to check if the bearing was OK. It was OK, so I have to look elsewhere for the faint thumping noise I get on the motorway at 70mph. Putting it all back together went very well, but after tightening the castellated nut to 150 lb f...
