I’ve got it!! I have seen the light- literally!! There is no earth for the ignition light as the route to earth within the alternator has been broken, therefore it will never light up. Managed to get a Lucas 45amp output alternator from Halfords for just over £39 which is far cheaper than other online suppliers.

Charles. Does this test confirm the integrity of the alternator to warning light connection and the warning light to ignition switch or just alternator to light.

About to buy a new alternator. Workshop Manual says 16acr is the right one. Various suppliers say 18ACR.
Other than the obvious increase in output are there any advantages or disadvantages in switching to 18ACR assuming that they are physically interchangeable .
