Re: Steering UJ
Mike B, how did you use the steering UJ you flagged in your link? It wouldn't fit my MGB. The UJ on my car is 3.25 inches long (82.5mm) with 2.5 inches between bolt centres (63.5mm). The number of splines is 48. This is the rubber bumper and V8 type, part number GLR3084. The Rally Design coupling in...

Re: Steering UJ
Thanks guys. Ian, it is definitely the UJ itself. The clamps are tight on the splines. On my V8 conversion access to the UJ is tricky as it is underneath the RH exhaust manifold. I can just get spanners on the top clamp bolt, but will need to unbolt the rack from the crossmember to lower the shaft e...

Steering UJ
Does a tiny amount of play in the steering universal joint mean an MOT failure? It's about 7mm play measured at the rim of the steering wheel. It's definitely play in the joint itself. I got my good lady to wiggle the wheel gently while I watched the joint. There seems to be a large difference in th...

Re: Door weather strip
I see you have a GT not a roadster. The GT is different. The weather strip you refer to (the drop glass seal, that presses on the outside of the glass) is held by clips, part number GHF 1560 to the chrome embellisher strip. Then the chrome embellisher with the seal attached is pop rivetted on the do...

Re: Squeaking wheel
I agree with Ian, my opinion also is that you have a sticking piston. Rather than just go for a replacement, I would remove the pads and then with a suitable G-clamp press the pistons right back into the caliper, taking care that the master cylinder reservoir doesn't overflow. Then replace the pads ...

Re: Respray costs
It looks a good car Geoff, assuming the underneath is solid and sound. What goes against it somewhat is the colour. Bolder colours seem more popular. I reckon it's worth more than you are asking even now, but if you've not had much interest, maybe I'm wrong. I wouldn't use Autotrader myself. I have ...

Re: Respray costs
I rebuilt a roadster about 18 months ago. By the time I had finished with welding the new panels, there was a lot of prep work needed to get it ready for painting. As I have no skills in prep or painting I entrusted it to a local bodyshop. They must have spent many hours on it and when I collected i...

Mine is (was, as it is now sold) a 1971 car so should be the same as yours.

Re: Ignition Help
Electronic switching only needs two cables, the red and black ones in your picture, red to a power source like the + on the coil, and the black to the negative on the coil. The thing you have circled is the port for the vacuum pipe from the inlet manifold or carbs. The suction applied to the vacuum ...

Re: Rebuilt Engine Burning Oil
90 miles between max and min! Are you followed by a blue cloud? If you are burning that much oil, is it coming out of the exhaust pipe as blueish smoke? Get someone to follow you and watch your tail pipe. It could be piston rings or through the valve guides. Are valve seals fitted, at least on the i...
