Re: Won’t start

The rapid ticking noise could be the fuel pump. The pump will continue to try and pump until the carbs are full at which point is should stop. If it continues you either have no fuel to pump, there is a leak in the system which would show as a puddle of fuel on the floor, or there is a fault in the p...

Best replacement engine

I have a 1979 MGB roadster and am looking to replace the engine. The current engine is a gold seal replacement unit but I don't know how many miles it has covered. The oil pressure has now dropped to 25psi, it burns/leaks oil at around 0.5 litres per 500 miles. and when starting from cold there is n...

Re: 78 MG B GT...Running Rich?

Hi Nathan, If you're looking for an MG specialist in the Beds/Northants/Hunts area you could try Beer's at Houghton, between Huntingdon and St Ives. I was having similar problems to those you are currently struggling with, they were sorted after one service. They also identified that the Gaz rear sh...

Re: MGB Roadster rear shock upgrade

I run the GAZ shocks and am very happy with the way they perform. They are relatively easy to adjust, but I tend to run them on the softest setting. I can't provide an accurate comparison of how they compare to the lever arms, as it is some years since I last drove a 'B' fitted with them.

Re: Losing coolant

I replaced the radiator expansion cap with a brand new 15lb cap, went for a 30 minute run at c60mph, when i got back the coolant had once again blown out through the expansion tank overflow. I let the engine cool down and after several hours, when stone cold, I released the cap and coolant erupted o...

Re: Losing coolant

Thanks for the responses. I've had the car on the drive and run it up to temperature where the electric fan kicks in, and looked all over for leaks, there are none evident. The expelled coolant is a slightly rusty colour (I'm topping up with plain water until I find the source of the problem) and th...

Losing coolant

I've had a disastrous summer, my B has been off the road for more time than on in what has been the best open top summer for years. Having replaced fuel pipes, coil, water pump and alternator this summer, my B now loses coolant ( 1 - 2 litres) after a high speed ( c65mph) run. There are no noticeabl...

Re: Ignition Light Does not come on - anytime!

Thanks gents, I had already ordered an alternator before finding an earlier post relating to the ignition bulb circuit feeding the alternator exciter. I'll now get hold of a replacement bulb and fit that, before fitting the new alternator. As an engineer, I can't understand why the circuit has been ...

Ignition Light Does not come on - anytime!

I recently experienced a number of problems where 'Lucy' my 1979 MGB, would cut out when running at relatively high speed in hot weather. I finally tracked this down to a failing ignition coil. Having replaced the ignition coil the problem was cured, but I've subsequently had problems starting, as t...
