Re: list to port on a 74 GT
Hi David, since none of the other gurus on this site have replied, I thought I should. But probably not very much help I suspect. You may be aware of the usual discrepancy in the offset of rear axles on MGBs (axle appears to be off centre when compared to the body), but it doesn't sound as if that's...

Re: Spark plug carbonisation
Hi Ian, as Vic says, almost certainly still too rich a mixture. Some things which you may wish to consider: # did these symptoms appear recently after a period of running well after the Webber was re-jetted? If so it might be that the jetting is in fact OK and that there has been some other paramete...

Re: SU problem on standard set-up
Thanks Vic. I've swopped the dampers over and will see what happens on the next long run. These are the original 1972 SUs and have been refurbished by me, but the damper/piston assembly isn't touched during refurbishment. I've never been sure which oil to use in the dashpots, the lubrication chart i...

SU problem on standard set-up
Just been for a longish run with the BGT and have a minor issue which has occurred both out and back. Speeds of circa 70 mph on motorway, standard carbs but with K&N filters, but probably totally irrelevant to this issue! SUs filled with Castrol 20/50. The issue: after each run the damper on the...

Re: MGB Batteries
Like Dave I have a battery isolation switch fitted to the bulkhead behind the passenger seat, in my case isolating twin 6 volt heavy duty batteries. I use a CTEK battery charger which has a connector fitted permanently to the battery posts and a small connector which sits at the edge of the rear sea...

Thanks Peter, I expected a very thorough exposition of "your views" and wasn't disappointed!

Re: Engine sump drain size?
A brief comment on this. I'm not sure that the drain plug is the optimum place for the sensor? I think what you really need to know is oil temperature leaving the engine before the oil cooler (if you have one fitted), or after the cooler if you want to see the temperature of the oil reaching the eng...

Re: engine oil dipstick
for what it's worth here are my observations relating to both MGB and Midget dipsticks: # after having had several examples of each engine I've noticed that there are some differences in the dipsticks fitted, but I couldn't offer any specific information. This being the case it seems possible (perha...

Re: Weber Carb Jets
Thanks for that Peter, I'm sure your advice would be very helpful to anyone who as not got specific experience of using a rolling road. I won't ask for recommendations though, as I'm up in Fife! I have considered coming down to see Peter Burgess or the folk at Aldon, but I never have, so can't provi...

Re: Weber Carb Jets
That's very impressive Peter, and I would agree with your views on the desirability of a good rolling road set-up. However it must be a place which is used to "our" cars! I took my 1954 Triumph TR2 (used in Hillclimbs) to a rolling road in Scotland and it was an expensive disaster. The per...
