Rear main oil seal for MGB 18GG engines
Does anybody have any knowledge/tips about changing the rear main oil seal on an 18GG engine? It is a standard unit, fitted to an automatic transmission box which is also being removed to replace the sump gasket at the same time. Although this engine was fully rebuilt 24 years ago it has only done 8...

Re: history of car.
I may be a little out of date here but if you have the chassis/engine number etc. is it still possible you could get a Heritage Certificate which will give you more information about the car as well as, possibly, the original registration number? I got my certificate from the British Motor Industry ...

Re: Engine sound dampening
The same noise increase happens on my 'B', but I suggest the root problem is actually the design/construction of the body which is doing this. If you look at the rear half of the body the axle is actually inside what amounts to almost a box which simply amplifies the noise of the axle together with ...

Re: Starting on a slope
If you can smell fuel you have a leak. Modern fuels can degrade rubber hoses - remove and check all of them around the fuel pump as well as the carburettors. If they are old just renew them - good quality fuel hose is cheap to buy. Check the copper fuel pipe - it normally lasts for ages but there ma...

Re: Starting on a slope
A simple way to check what is happening with the oil is to remove the coil lead so it won't fire and then to spin the engine over.
If the gauge registers pressure you have pickup in the sump o.k. - if it doesn't move then you have to worry..........

Re: Starting on a slope
One thing I omitted from my earlier post - you should ensure that the float heights are correct as per the handbook for your car. If they aren't it is possible that sitting on a slope will exaggerate the fuel levels one way or the other and this could affect the amount going - or not going - into th...

Re: Mgb speedometer
If it runs up to 40mph it suggests that the speedo cable is fitted and working reasonably correctly, and the problem is therefore with the speedo. You could try a small amount of lubrication down the cable from the speedo end, but I would have thought you really need a new speedo head. Make sure you...

Re: Starting on a slope
Whenever I start my car I always switch on the ignition and then wait until the fuel pump stops, so I know the carbs are full whatever level it is parked on. I then pull the choke out to the maximum - check you actually have full travel as this is not always the case and if you don't have full choke...
