Re: Overdrive cutting off

Does it come in if you pull the gear stick towards you ? If so then its the inhibitor switch on the gearbox which stops you engaging when in 1st and 2nd. You might have to take out a fibre washer from underneath it. Difficult but do-able. You might have to drop the cross member. Most problems with t...

Re: best workshop manual

I too have Haynes and a factory workshop manual. I find the Haynes easier to find stuff in and more detailed in text for the DIY bloke but sometimes the bit of your car you want to renovate isn't covered if its peculiar to your model year. Also find the exploded diagrams in the Moss catalogue useful...

Re: Brakes continually need re-bleeding / reservoir needs topping up

I don't agree, having driven B's with and without servos I consider they are a welcome addition. The brake feel with a servo is very good, it just requires less effort. I probably have a strong enough right leg to be able to lock all four without one but why make it harder than it needs to be. Just ...

Re: Fitting inertia real seat belts to a roadster

I fitted Securon inertia reel seatbelts to my B. You have to drill a hole in the wheekarch and they supply a substantial strengthening plate for the inside (wheel side). The single large fixing secures them both this and the seatbelt unit. Its never going to rip out. I've run 185 tyres and they didn...

Re: V8 Oil Leak

First let me say that I've never owned a car with a Rover V8 but are you sure its not leaking from the rocker covers or the Valley cover in the vee (known fault with the engine). Have you been on the V8 register website ? https://www.v8register.net/ I couldn't see anything specifically on oil leaks ...

Re: 123 ignition

The resistor is in series with the coil so drops the voltage the coil sees to a nominal 6V. When cranking 12V is fed from the starter motor so in effect you are running a 6V coil at 12 V which is supposed to give a better spark. I think it just ensures a good spark if your battery is on the flat side.

Re: 123 ignition

My friends 68 B had had a ballasted ignition system fitted to it. I removed the resistor, wire down to the starter motor and fitted a new Bosch blue coil (as recommended by 123)

Re: 123 ignition

I helped my friend fit a 123 distributor to his mildly tuned MGB.(his engine is closest to a 1972 18V engine and has the larger inlet valves) He's tickled pink with it. We set it to curve 2 which is the 40897 advance curve standard for pre 1973 cars. Peter Burgess says in his book that this curve is...

Re: Spitting through HS4 carb

I believe the default setting for the position of the jet is 0.060" or 1.6 mm down from the bridge. I find that although this might not be the optimum setting for every engine they normally run OK at this. Getting the mixture right on both carbs is the trickiest adjustment, each carb should be ...
