Re: Oil burning off bringing smoke in through the footwells
I agree with Ian, this sounds like an oil leak. Favourite would be rocker box gasket which are about £1 and a piece of cake to fit. Then tappet chest or sump joint which are more difficult but still not major work for a mechanic. Similar for timing chain cover. You also need to look at your breather...

Funny how your opinion of MG Motors offerings change when you find out that SAIC have just sacked 200 of your mates

Re: MOT Exemption.
Vic and Peter, I'm surprised your MOT history is not visible even if you don't have a current MOT. I would have also thought that you would have to declare your vehicles as not substantially modified when you 'taxed' them. I know I did. I will continue to submit my car for a voluntary test because I...

Re: MOT Exemption.
Don't think so Vic, just checked the history on my 1971 B and its intact including the voluntary test I had since registering as a Vehicle of Historic Interest. So think something has gone wrong at the DVLA regarding your Land Rover. I 'taxed' my B last year when there was insufficient MOT left by d...

Re: Hidden Music Source
Snap Peter, My understanding is that Bwlch Y Groes also known as Hellfire pass was used by Rover in the 1920's to test durability. I've also heard it called gearbox hill. There are supposed to be fairies up there. The MGB is before my time at Longbridge so I don't know if it was ever tested there. I...

You would expect a Latic to be from Oldham but the fact that he says he's blue suggests he is a Manchester City supporter.

Re: valve seat inserts
David - I had trouble with a weeping thermostat housing, turns out the leak was up the studs, they screw directly into the water jacket of the head. The solution was to ditch the spring washers and apply gasket goo to the plain washers under the head of the nuts.

Re: Steering Wheel Removal
My B is a 71 GHN5 and I'm pretty sure it doesn't have the collapsible column. It also had an Astrali steering wheel when I bought it. I have fitted the original MG wheel (well its off a V8 actually) because I was finding the steering heavy at parking speeds. I got the Astrali off by jamming my knees...

Re: valve seat inserts
I agree with Peter that it looks like there is an insert in the exhaust side, not so sure about the inlet. I didn't think that inlet valves recessed. On 'A' series the factory only ever put an insert in the exhaust side right up to the end of production, well into the unleaded era. I seem to remembe...

Re: Oil pressure
I had a problem with low oil pressure after an engine re build. We eventually traced it to the oil filter head. The pipe which goes inside the filter was sticking up too much and fouling the valve in the top of the Rover filter. It hadn't been a problem with the Mann filters I generally use. So its ...
